Advancing Indigenous recruitment, employee experience and Indigenous-specific anti-racism at Provincial Health Services

Sanya’k̓ula is PHSA’s Indigenous Recruitment and Employee Experience team. We support First Nations, Métis and Inuit applicants and employees across their PHSA journey—from exploring career opportunities and navigating recruitment to finding connection, community and support once they are here. Our team works with applicants, employees, hiring teams, leaders, Indigenous communities and employment partners to strengthen relational and culturally safe recruitment, increase Indigenous representation, create pathways into healthcare, and advance Indigenous-specific anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety throughout the employee experience. Sanya’k̓ula means “Together in Knowledge.” The name was gifted by our program Knowledge Keeper, Wedlidi Speck, and reflects the knowledge, gifts, lived experiences and relationships each member of our team brings to the work. At the heart of it, we want Indigenous Peoples to feel welcomed, respected, supported and able to thrive at PHSA.

Receive and assess imaging requisitions, prepare pediatric patients and families, perform radiographic and forensic examinations, and process and evaluate images for quality. Support fluoroscopic procedures, prepare contrast agents and sterile supplies, maintain patient safety and comfort, and follow departmental standards for radiation protection and equipment use.

Provide specialized medical and surgical intensive care to critically ill newborns in British Columbia's largest NICU and only quaternary referral centre. Collaborate with neonatal health professionals and dedicated resuscitation teams to deliver integrated, patient- and family-centred care.

Provide outpatient nursing care to patients in the CARE Program, including preparation for pregnancy termination, conscious sedation, and post-procedure recovery. Educate and support patients, collaborate with the multidisciplinary team, maintain clinical records and care standards, contribute to workflow and program development, and participate in emergency preparedness.

Provide trauma-informed nursing care to incarcerated clients with complex physical, mental health, substance use, and communicable disease needs, including assessments, triage, treatment, medication administration, monitoring, and documentation. Coordinate care and discharge planning with clients and interprofessional teams, provide health education, and make referrals to appropriate providers.

Provide peer-based one-to-one support and help facilitate groups, empowering clients with mental health and substance use challenges to build skills and reintegrate into the community. Share health and community resource information, support clients and their networks in accessing services, and advocate for clients’ rights and needs.

Collect patient samples, perform laboratory procedures, analyze and verify results, and prepare and communicate reports according to established procedures. Prepare reagents and controls, maintain and calibrate instruments, report equipment malfunctions, and contribute to evaluating and maintaining technical procedures.
