The Shelter is a 35-bed emergency residential facility for male youth between the ages of 16 to 24. The Shelter provides a safe, secure environment where the residents have access to housing help, employment search, supportive counseling and a variety of programs geared to assist youth on the road to independent living. Shelter Youth Workers are responsible for providing direct care and supervision to the residents and for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the Shelter.

What You Will Do Incorporate in your work a strengths-based relationship-based philosophy of care and a belief in the resilience of youth. Provide direct, client care and supervision to clients in a shelter setting. Promote and integrate Youth and Family Engagement. Promote an environment of inclusion that promotes equity and respects diversity. Ensure the safety and security of the residents in the program. Maintain sound working knowledge of relevant legislation and requirements that guide the operations of the Shelter, including City of Toronto Shelter Standards. Perform duties related to the intake and discharge of clients. Prepare and supervise mealtime routines Perform facility and perimeter checks, and log accordingly. Complete documentation and reports as required. Participate in the day-to-day operation of the facility. Shift work is required. Perform other duties as required. What You Bring to the Team University or College degree and/or diploma in a related field (i.e.; BSW, CYC, SSW, etc.) Some previous experience working with adolescents or homeless youth, preferably in a shelter setting. Sound knowledge of the issues facing homeless and street-involved youth. Good communication skills – verbal and written Good administration and computer skills. Able to work well as part of a team Valid “Understanding and Managing Aggressive Behaviour” certification. Valid “First Aid/CPR” certification Completion of required suicide prevention and intervention training. What Will Set You Apart Understanding of the complex issues facing our clients. Appreciation of the importance of engaging youth and families from a strength-based relationship-based approach. Sensitivity to, and ability to work with, a diverse client and staff group. Ability to demonstrate an anti-oppression approach to practice and work from a client-centered, anti-racism, harm reduction, and trauma informed approach is required. Demonstrate knowledge of issues affecting marginalized communities, policies, legislation, programs, and other issues related to scope of practice and social determinants of health. Experience working with diverse and marginalized communities, including ethno-cultural and religious groups, LGBTQSS+ youth and youth adults, those impacted by poverty and those involved in youth justice.
