Job Description:

Overview

As an Inclusion Worker, you will provide 1:1 support to participants with disabilities in municipal recreation programming, including swimming lessons, art classes, sport classes, and more. You have a strong interest in connecting with your participant and providing unique supports and accommodations while encouraging maximum participation.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews participant’s accommodation plan to familiarize self with participant’s social history, interests, abilities, needs, etc.
  • Assists participants with program activities as outlined in their accommodation plans.
  • Provides suggestions to program staff as it relates to program/equipment adaptations to allow for successful participation of participant.
  • Ensures participants successful involvement in recreation program, based on individual’s abilities.
  • Monitors the safety and well-being of participants and reports or documents any challenges or concerns.
  • Recognizes the participant’s strengths and limitations and provides program modifications based on their abilities while considering the need for safety.
  • Assists participants with personal hygiene (e.g., toileting, changing, washing hands).
  • Assists participants in and out of wheelchairs, on and off toilets, etc., using appropriate lifting techniques and procedures.
  • Responds to behavioural issues and proactively plans to prevent issues from escalating.
  • Responds to escalated issues ensuring safety of all (e.g., implementation of approved physical intervention techniques).
  • Responds to basic participant and family inquiries when possible/applicable; refers advanced issues to coordinator, supervisor, or manager.
  • Observes and immediately reports changes in participants’ physical and emotional conditions to coordinator, supervisor, or manager.
  • Ensures medications are taken by participants and stored in a safe/secure space.
  • Ensures areas are accessible and barrier free for participants.
  • Completes incident reports as required.
  • Provides first aid and CPR as required.
  • Performs duties in accordance with corporate confidentiality standards.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education

  • Minimum Grade 12 diploma plus up to 1 year of additional job related post-secondary education.

Experience

  • Minimum 1 month of related and relevant experience.

Skill Equivalency (if applicable)

Additional Requirements

  • Valid CPR Level "C" and Standard First Aid Certificate

  • Ability to provide a satisfactory Police Reference Check (Vulnerable Sector) issued after March 1, 2026 upon conditional offer

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a variety of municipal recreation spaces (e.g., golf course, community center, swimming pool, outdoors).
  • May be exposed to body fluids and waste when assisting participants with personal care in washrooms requiring the use of disposable gloves.
  • May be required to work with participants who may bite or scratch requiring the incumbent to wear protective arm guards.
  • Performs work in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and current COVID-19 guidelines and measures, including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment to mitigate risk.

Hours a week: Up to 24 hours per week

Hours of work: Hours vary and depend on support requests (evening and/or weekend work may be required).

  • Support shifts range between 1 – 3 hours long with an opportunity to take on multiple supports and increase hours.
  • Full day support shifts available during school breaks (PD Days, Winter Break, and March Break).
  • Hours of work depend on number of support requests.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • City of Kitchener approved behaviour management certification (e.g. PMAB, BMS, NVCI) post-hire.
  • Ability to lift 35 pounds unassisted.
  • Ability to swim/provide support in the water
  • It is recommended that vaccinations (Tdap, MMR, chickenpox, Hepatitis B) are updated and current for the period of employment.
  • Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
