The Water Resources Engineer / Hydrologist position is integral to our Environmental and Land Use Planning Division's continued growth. We are seeking a Water Resources Engineer or Hydrologist specialized in the design engineering of small bridges and small- and large-diameter culverts, with additional responsibility for stormwater management planning, pond design, and drainage design. The successful candidate will independently coordinate field data collection, complete watershed and flow analyses, and deliver IFC drawings and sizing memos for right-sized watercourse crossings and stormwater infrastructure.
The Work Hybrid Office (80%) / Field (20%) Design small bridges and small- and large-diameter culverts for watercourse crossings on construction, mining, hydro, and pipeline projects. Conduct extensive watershed and flow analyses, including flow frequency estimates, design storm analyses, and peak discharge calculations, to determine appropriate crossing and infrastructure sizing. Prepare stormwater management plans, including runoff calculations, water balance, and compliance with applicable municipal, provincial, and watershed-specific requirements. Design stormwater ponds, including sizing, grading, outlet structures, and storage/detention requirements. Complete drainage design for site and infrastructure projects, including conveyance systems, culverts, ditches, and low impact development features where applicable. Independently coordinate field data collection, including conventional survey and UAV-based data capture, to support design. Complete drafting and design of Issued-for-Construction (IFC) drawings for bridge, culvert, stormwater, and drainage infrastructure. Prepare sizing memos and supporting technical documentation for regulatory submissions and client review. Develop care-of-water and stream isolation plans, including flow diversion, sediment control, and construction dewatering strategies, as needed. Coordinate with environmental scientists, civil designers, surveyors, and regulatory agencies to integrate hydrologic and structural considerations into multidisciplinary project designs. Conduct field investigations to verify site hydrology, collect flow data, and assess drainage and crossing features. Support project managers with technical input, cost estimates, and schedule considerations related to crossing, stormwater, and drainage design.
This is a part-time role initially. Candidates who bring additional skills applicable elsewhere in the division — including field operations roles — may be considered for expanded hours and responsibilities.
Collaboration and Communication Demonstrate a commitment to Connexa's core values in all professional activities. Collaborate with other Connexa team members, client field representatives, and surveying/UAV crews as required. Maintain strong verbal and written communication skills to convey technical findings effectively to internal teams, clients, and regulators.
Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, or a related field. Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or CET designation, registered or eligible for registration in BC and/or AB. Demonstrated experience in design engineering of small bridges and culverts, including sizing, structural coordination, and IFC drawing production. Demonstrated experience in stormwater management plan preparation, stormwater pond design, and drainage design. Strong background in watershed delineation, runoff modelling, and flow analysis for crossing and stormwater infrastructure design. Proficiency in HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, PCSWMM, HY-8, or similar hydrologic and hydraulic modelling software. Experience with drafting/design software for IFC drawing production (e.g., Civil 3D or equivalent). Ability to independently plan and coordinate field data collection, including survey and UAV data capture. Experience interpreting provincial watercourse crossing guidelines, Water Act and Code of Practice requirements, and DFO fish passage criteria. Excellent written and verbal communication skills for preparing technical reports, drawings, and regulatory submissions. Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel for fieldwork in BC and AB as required.
Nice-to-Have Skills Experience operating or coordinating UAV survey platforms directly. Familiarity with municipal stormwater bylaws and low impact development (LID) design principles. Interest or experience in field operations roles (environmental monitoring, construction inspection) that could expand scope beyond design work. Project coordination experience. Experience supporting environmental assessments or Water Act approvals.
The Workplace This is a hybrid, part-time position based out of the Lower Mainland, BC, with project work primarily located across BC and Alberta. Field involvement may include coordination of survey/UAV data collection trips as project needs arise.
