Duties and Responsibilities: The Technician provides academic, technical, and operational support for the Faculties Science, Engineering and Technology (SET), and Hospitality and Horticultural Science (HHS) at the Whitby Campus. The role is integral to supporting the delivery of practical, laboratory, and experiential learning activities by ensuring laboratories, equipment, materials, and supplies are prepared, maintained, and available to support curriculum delivery and student success.

Working closely with faculty, staff, industry partners, and students, the incumbent coordinates laboratory readiness, inventory management, procurement, equipment maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and health and safety compliance. The Technician ensures that laboratory environments operate effectively, safely, and in alignment with program requirements, institutional policies, and regulatory standards. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment, records, maintenance logs, and standard operating procedures, while providing technical expertise and support to faculty, students, and administration. The role also supports laboratory operations, storage management, equipment lifecycle planning, and continuous improvement initiatives that enhance the quality and effectiveness of academic programming.

In addition, the Technician works alongside work-study students, providing mentorship, guidance, and ongoing support to promote safe and effective laboratory practices and adherence to established health and safety standards. The incumbent contributes to maintaining clean, organized, and operational learning environments and may support workshops, student recruitment activities, special projects, and other initiatives that advance program excellence and campus engagement.

Qualifications: A minimum of a 3-year diploma or degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Architectural Technology, Horticulture and/or Sciences, or a related field. Minimum 2 years of recent, relevant experience. It is an asset if this experience is supporting laboratory, technical, or applied learning environments within civil engineering, horticulture, architectural, construction, or related disciplines. Demonstrated experience operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and supporting technical laboratory equipment and related testing procedures; experience in civil, chemical, or food science laboratories is an asset. Experience with inventory management, purchasing, budget monitoring, and procurement processes, including obtaining quotations, preparing requisitions, and maintaining appropriate stock levels.
