Job Summary & Key Responsibilities

The sessional instructor will be the Professor of Record for PHYT 6140.06 and responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the course which includes lectures, test preparation and evaluation of students. The instructor would work in partnership with course professors teaching concurrently within the fall term. In addition, the instructor will hold regular office hours for consultation with students. The term begins on September 8, 2026, and finishes on December 9, 2026, followed by an exam scheduled within the University Examination Period. The course schedule is three lectures per week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1:35 to 3:25. Over the fall term, the commitment will approximate 16 to 20 hours per week.

The course involves lectures on the microanatomy, gross anatomy, and neurophysiology of the brain and spinal cord. Examinations emphasize the functional systems involving these structures.

Course Description: This graduate level course in neuroscience will expose entry-level physiotherapy students to the foundational and advanced neuroanatomical and neurophysiological concepts and knowledge needed for evidence-based practice in neurorehabilitation. Emphasis will be placed on the functional neuroscience of brain systems implicated in commonly encountered neurological conditions.

General course objectives include:

  • Locate, identify and describe key brain and spinal cord structures, and understand the role that these structures play in neurological (dys) function.

  • Understand the organization of the major functional pathways of the brain and spinal cord, as well as the consequences of their (dys) function.

  • Discuss and apply concepts related to nervous system development, neuroplasticity, motor control, sensation, consciousness, and higher cortical functions.

  • Explain the functional neuroscience of brain systems implicated in various neurological challenges.

  • Recognize, discuss and apply neuroscience knowledge as it relates to physiotherapy practice with individuals experiencing neurological challenges.

  • Demonstrate effective communication and team dynamics necessary for effective collaborative practice.

The objectives and content in PHYT 6140 relate to elements of the “Seven Dimensions of Essential Competencies” as detailed in the Competency Profile for the Entry-Level Physiotherapist in Canada (2017). Qualifications/Requirements of Position

PhD or Masters degree (non-professional). Teaching and/or research experience in topics of Neuroanatomy/Neuroscience a requirement. Previous teaching experience (especially with graduate students) preferred. Experience with online learning management systems (i.e. Brightspace) preferred. Experience in working collaboratively with instructors and teaching assistants and in conveying the clinical relevance or application of knowledge to physiotherapy is an asset.
