Job Description: Accountabilities: Client Services: Provide for personal care in accordance with established policy, any physician’s orders, the plan of care and within the scope of practice. Contribute to and follow a plan of care to meet participant’s assessed needs. Maintain accurate and completed records of personal care delivered. Observe, report, and record participant conditions. Answer call signals from participants. Demonstrate a professional working knowledge of all equipment used in the delivery of personal care; use proper lifting and transfer techniques including use of mechanical lifts. Assist in maintaining an environment appropriate to meet participant’s individualized needs. Provide, supervise and/or assist with any exercise routines and leisure activities for participants. Maintain inventory of supplies. Prepare and serve meals and snacks following Safe Food Handling principles and individual dietary needs. Assist with the safe arrival and departure of participants. Maintain organization of participant belongings. Administer, in emergency situations, first aid to injured or ill individuals within the scope of competencies. Maintain accurate documentation. Participate in client reassessments. Communicate participant needs, incidents, and concerns promptly to team members, Program Supervisor and/or on-call designate, and care partners. Complete and submit incident reports as required. Support program evaluation and continuous quality improvement activities. Provide orientation, mentoring, and support to new hires, casual relief staff, students, and volunteers. Report any property damage, equipment malfunctions, or repairs needed to the Supervisor. Perform light cleaning, laundry, and start/end-of-day routines per established checklists. Perform other position related duties as required. Working Conditions: This is a permanent part-time position based on 15 hours every other weekend with the possibility of additional casual relief hours. Work will be performed in the facility space. Flexibility in scheduling is required to meet program requirements; schedule includes days and afternoons The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule. Ability to lift/move up to 20 lbs. and apply effective body mechanics and meet the physical demands of the position. May require some amount of standing, lifting, bending, and carrying of supplies. Requires attention to following safety procedures and regulations. May be exposed to disagreeable people, verbal abuse, people with behavioural or mental health challenges and may be exposed to hazardous cleaning chemicals. Normal hours of work: Work schedule will be set by your Supervisor as per program hours of operation including Friday, Saturday and Sunday every other weekend. Work schedule includes a 1/2 hour paid meal break. Education, Qualifications and Certifications: Personal Support Worker Certificate is required. Current First Aid/CPR certification. Bilingual in French is preferred. Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements: Minimum of one (1) year of prior work experience working with cognitively impaired/frail elderly populations. Current Safe Food Handling Certification. Current Gentle Persuasive Approach training or willingness to obtain. Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities. Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures. Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a vulnerable sector check search. NOTE: Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered. Skills and Capabilities: Use a client-centered approach by consistently demonstrating compassion, respect, and empathy in all interactions. High standards of integrity, judgment, and confidentiality. Attention to details. Strong communication skills as well as strong writing and oral skills in English. Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner and assist personnel whom the position supports in developing those skills as required. Knowledge of current quality improvement and risk management concepts and approaches with special emphasis on the prevention of falls. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products. Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $23.10 to $28.88 with a maximum of $34.65. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
