Job Description Summary: Position Summary

In collaboration with the CapU school of Tourism Management, the Student Housing Services Intern role is designed to provide valuable professional development opportunities for undergraduate students interested in gaining practical experiences relating to tourism and hospitality management. Reporting to the Manager, Short Term Accommodation, the Intern will contribute to the further development of Student Housing Services at Capilano University. The Student Intern will support the daily operations of housing and guest services at the Squamish Campus. This role offers hands-on experience in hospitality management, including reservations, event coordination, housekeeping, front desk, guest relations and operational support.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The Student Housing Services Intern will:

Develop a deeper understanding of hospitality management practices, including guest services, housekeeping, event coordination, and housing/hotel operations. Enhance problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills by managing guest inquiries and addressing issues in a fast-paced environment. Gain experience in coordinating and executing large-scale events, including logistical support and on-the-ground operations. Improve organizational and administrative skills through managing housing guest check-ins and creating operational reports. Gain exposure to industry-standard software and tools used in guest services and event management.

Job Description: DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist with the coordination and execution of summer conference operations, ensuring a smooth experience for guests and conference attendees. Support the management of housing assignments, check-in/check-out processes, and guest services to provide exceptional customer experience. Assists with room checks and inventory in preparation for guest check-in. Handle guest inquiries and resolve issues related to accommodations, ensuring that all concerns are addressed promptly and professionally. Collaborate with other team members and departments to assist with event logistics, housing setup, and maintenance coordination. Participate in training sessions to develop practical skills in hospitality management, customer service, and operations within a conference setting. Contributes to the development of guest service materials, including information packets and signage, to enhance the guest experience. Completes additional project work as assigned by the Manager, Student Housing Services.

Strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of approachability and empathy. Excellent intercultural communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work positively in diverse communities. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Strong critical thinking skills and ability to make decisions under pressure. Demonstrated skills in planning, time management, and attention to detail, particularly regarding programming and events. Ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with freedom of information and protection of privacy (FOIPOP) regulations, and deal with sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for student employment, a student must be in good academic standing with the University. Good standing is defined as having a GPA of 2.0 and no current notations regarding academic standing, student conduct or outstanding fees per policy S2003-003 Academic Standing, a copy of which can be found on the University's website.

Domestic students must be enrolled in, and maintain, a minimum of two or more (6 credits) courses at Capilano University throughout the work term; international students must: during the fall and winter semesters, be enrolled in, and maintain, a minimum of 9 credits at Capilano University throughout the work term; have a valid Study Permit.

Student employees are not required to be enrolled in courses during the summer term to maintain eligibility for employment; however, they must have been enrolled in a minimum of six credits during the preceding spring term. Furthermore, international students must abide by the terms of their work or study visas.

Students who complete their studies in the spring or summer terms may have their appointments extended until August 31 of the same year; students who complete their studies in the fall term may have their appointments extended until December 31 of the same year.
