Opportunity
MacEwan University is seeking Standardized Patient Actors for casual opportunities with the Faculty of Nursing.
You will support nursing and health education by accurately and consistently portraying realistic patient scenarios within a controlled lab or simulation environment. In this role as a standardized patient actor, you will receive, study and follow a specific learning script with outlined parameters for each learning situation which is led by faculty members. You will be a part of a complex, immersive learning activity that allows students to practice clinical, communication, assessment, and professionalism skills by consistently and accurately representing patient conditions, behaviours, and histories.
Key responsibilities include:
- Portraying assigned patient roles including medical, surgical, mental health, obstetrics, or community health scenarios, and completing requested activities aligned with a scripted experience in nursing and allied health lab and simulation settings;
- Studying, preparing and following detailed case scripts, including medical history, symptoms, emotional responses, and physical behaviours;
- Interacting with nursing and allied health students to support skill development in assessment, communication, clinical reasoning, and patient-centered care;
- Responding consistently and appropriately to student questions and interventions according to scenario guidelines and parameters;
- Participating in simulation briefings, orientation, rehearsals, and debriefings, as required;
- Providing constructive feedback to students on communication, professionalism, and patient interaction, when requested by the faculty member;
- Maintaining confidentiality of student performance and simulation scenario content and process;
- Collaborating with faculty members, Clinical Simulation Centre staff, and other staff in the Faculty of Nursing to support learning outcomes;
- Offering feedback to the lead Clinical Simulation Centre staff or faculty specific to the script, when requested;
- Reviewing and asking questions about the script, as needed, prior to the scheduled acting event; and
- Mentoring new standardized patient actors who are unfamiliar with the script, where appropriate.
Skills
You will have:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
- Reliability, professionalism, and punctuality;
- Comfort and confidence in educational and/or healthcare training environments; and
- The ability to give feedback and adapt performance based on feedback received.
Qualifications
- A minimum of a high school diploma with applicable high school courses in drama or a related field.
- Current enrollment in or completion of post-secondary coursework or programs in theatre, drama, acting, performance studies, or a related discipline would be considered an asset.
- Experience working in diverse environments would be considered an asset.
- Experience with role-play and/or acting would be considered an asset.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Position Requirements
- This position is on campus only.
- The ability to do light lifting and bending.
- Must be comfortable wearing costume wigs, clothing, gowns, etc. and theatre make-up to convey simulated injuries and/or bleeding depending on the scenario.
