Position: Head Lifeguard (Part-time) Vacancies: More than 1 position will be filled Job Type: Part Time Department: Aquatics Reports to: Manager, Aquatics Pay Type: Hourly Starting Rate: $33.69 General Accountability: The purpose of this position is to provide guidance and mentorship to lifeguards to ensure the safe and smooth daily operation of swimming/aquatics programming to all expected standards. The position supports the Aquatics Lead and Manager of Aquatics in administrative duties related to staff shift scheduling, in-service planning, on-the-job training and mentoring to Lifeguards, and to generally assist with the day-to-day coordination and operations of the Aquatics Department. In addition to Head Lifeguard responsibilities, the position is expected to conduct all lifeguarding, swim instructing, cleaning and other related duties. The incumbent is expected to communicate clearly and concisely and actively contribute to achieving team results. Head Lifeguard Duties: Overall responsibility for on-shift operations including staff and patron safety, and customer service and well-being Oversees and ensures staff operation, shift breaks, lifeguard rotations, and safety procedures while on shift Provides feedback in a timely and effective manner to Lifeguards to improve overall guarding skills Instructs and mentors Lifeguards in pool operations and maintenance duties using established training checklists, reference manuals, and competency forms Assists in training new aquatics staff Ensures the aquatics equipment and facility is clean including change rooms, deck and patron areas and maintained to standards, corrects or instructs Lifeguards to address deficiencies in a timely manner Ensures that patrons receive excellent and seamless customer service Acts as a shift leader and communicates and completes shift reports Performs opening and closing pool procedures Responsible for the safe operation of the aquatics area, ensuring adherence to Alberta Health Regulations & Lifesaving Society Standards, including ratio standards Facilitates staff and tasks through emergency procedures and health and safety issues while on shift Reports any deficiencies or safety concerns regarding safety equipment, facility equipment, janitorial supplies or other related supplies Makes recommendations to the Aquatics Lead and Manager of Aquatics to increase overall efficiency and effectiveness of aquatic programs and services, supports in drafting Standard Operating Procedures and staff communications Responds to and resolve customer concerns, elevating complex issues to the Aquatics lead Assists the Aquatics Lead in creating staff schedules, monitors shift changes and ensues adequate coverage Ensures accurate and up-to-date class lists and attendance sheets for swimming lessons Promotes teambuilding and mentoring of all aquatics staff and volunteers Teach Aquafit Classes Lifeguard / Swim Instructor Duties: Performs duties of lifeguard and instructor in a professional manner Awareness and ability to use various forms of communication such as whistles, hand signals, body language, written, phone, and radio Ensures adherence of self and staff to the Town policies and procedures, relevant standards and legislation and the Aquatics Staff Manual Maintains a general knowledge of all programs available at the facility Qualifications: National Lifeguard Award (NL) Intermediate First Aid, CPR Level C/AED Lifesaving Society Instructor (LSI) AFLCA Aquafitness certification/ or equivalent certification Swim Coaching experience or certification is an asset Minimum of 2 years or 2080 hours of lifeguard experience Previous experience as a Head Lifeguard is an asset Demonstrated advanced lifeguarding skills Able to open (6am or earlier) and close the pool (10pm or later) independently Proficiency with MS Office suite of programs, knowledge of booking/recreation software used for staff scheduling, swim lesson registration and badges Exceptional communication skills with an ability to effectively relate with all levels of aquatic staff and the public Knowledge of Alberta Health Regulations (Pool) Demonstrated ability to work well in a team environment Demonstrated skills in coaching and mentoring others Strong customer service skills with the ability to deal with the public in a positive, courteous manner Proven experience in a similar role requiring leadership or supervision Physically fit with the ability to lift to 50 lbs. and work in a daily routine of sitting, standing, walking, swimming, crouching and kneeling, and prolonged periods of time in the pool or on the pool deck Ability to always meet the physical fitness standards of the National Lifeguard Award Working Conditions: Guarding uniform is required Must be on time for all guarding and lesson start times Ability to attend mandatory in-service training (held approximately once a month and often on a Sunday evening) Extremely flexible hours (evenings, weekends, nights and holidays), shift work and split shifts, if required This competition will remain open until filled, with a first review date of June 4, 2026. Requirements
Requires National Lifeguard and LSI certifications, Intermediate First Aid, and a minimum of 2 years of lifeguarding experience. Must be physically fit and available for flexible shifts, including early mornings, late nights, and weekends.
