Description

The Cook prepares and delivers nutritious meals as outlined in menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Willingness to work within the mission, vision & values of The Salvation
  • Use a client-centered approach by consistently demonstrating compassion, respect and
  • Preparing and presenting nutritious meals for the Centre of Hope guests and the Sobering & Assessment Program.
  • Ensuring food services comply with Food Safe regulations, Canada Food Guide, and approved menu plan. Log all data as required for the kitchen.
  • Makes use of and decides on the best use of resources, including donations, to minimize waste.
  • Ensuring preventative maintenance procedures are followed for all food-services equipment.
  • Maintaining the Food Services area and equipment to a high standard of cleanliness.

  • May help in washing dishes, saucepans, pots and utensils used in the operation of the
  • Follows work practices to ensure the efficient delivery of food

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Certifications:

  • Completed grade 12 high school diploma.
  • Food Safe Level 1
  • CPR First Aid ©, or willingness to obtain.
  • WHMIS Training & Universal Precautions Training

Note: an alternative level of education and experience may be considered.

Experience:

  • Minimum one year experience cooking in an industrial kitchen.
  • Knowledge about food preparation and is familiar with kitchen equipment.
  • Have knowledge of safe handling guidelines and proper maintenance and operation of all equipment
  • Prior kitchen/restaurant helper experience is an asset.

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced
  • Adaptability to change and frequent
  • Agreeable to a flexible, non-routine schedule
  • Willingness to adhere to the Mission, Vision, and Values of The Salvation Army
  • Fluent in spoken and written English
  • Excellent team and interpersonal skills
  • Able to handle physical demands, which include lifting/carrying items up to 30 pounds.
  • Has the ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • The performance of the job requires attentive listening (empathy to guests/volunteers/co-workers) and the ability to give directions. It also requires frequent attention to the preparation of food, reading recipes, adhering to safety procedures and regulations and keeping track of what supplies are needed before running out.

HOURS:

  • 20 hours
  • Flexibility in hours is expected & work may include evenings and weekends.

Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety
