Position Overview

Reporting to the Aquatics Supervisor, Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring a safe aquatic environment and delivering quality, values based programming in the Aquatic area. Lifeguards will be responsible for providing service and will ensure the safety and wellbeing of all participants in the pool and on the pool deck. On any particular work day, lifeguards take a headcount of people swimming and ensure that they are kept safe by calling out to them in case they venture too far or have been in the water for too long. The need to be vigilant at all times is high in this position. In the event of a mishap, they are responsible for performing lifesaving activities such as resuscitation and first aid.


The ideal candidate will be available to work flexible shifts including: early morning, days, evenings and weekend


Core Responsibilities

  • Maintains constant surveillance of members in the facility.
  • Ensure all safety and lifeguarding procedures are adhered to, and in the event of an emergency respond as trained by the Association.
  • Acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
  • Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
  • Ensure that staff, volunteers and members adhere to pool conduct guidelines and maintain order in his/her designated area as a proactive approach to ensuring safety and accident prevention.
  • Maintain accurate, up to date progress sheets and records for participants; keep Daily Logs up to date and accurate.
  • Plan, organize and implement progressive lesson plans.
  • Attend all scheduled shifts; if unavailable, secures a replacement.
  • Set up and take down program and other equipment as required; checking that equipment is safe and in good repair (reporting any malfunctions and removing damaged equipment from circulation).


Skills and Qualifications

  • 16 years of age or older
  • Current National Lifeguard Service Award, Pool Option
  • Valid Standard First Aid & CPR-C with AED
  • YMCA, Red Cross, or Lifesaving Swim Instructor certification preferred
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills
  • Proven communication skills both verbal and written
  • Employment is contingent on having a clean Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search along with clearance from Department of Social Development.
