Description

In compliance with the Mission Statement of The Salvation Army Hamilton Booth Centre, to minister to those in need and other persons affected by homelessness by practical assistance through a demonstration of Christian love and concern. Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Residential Worker will provide a service to residents/clients by ensuring their safety while interacting in a positive, supportive manner, make referrals to other day staff as appropriate and to protect the property of The Salvation Army Booth Centre

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Service Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial screening of client seeking admission ensuring individual behaviour is of acceptable standard per Policy and Procedure manual.
  • Complete client intake by assisting the client complete the Social Services intake form (pink sheet).
  • Compare pink sheets to client file card, update or commence new card.
  • Register clients, assign bed, and provide towel if required.
  • Using discretion, depending on which shift you are working, provide meal tickets (or prepared bag lunches) according to approved procedures.
  • Complete hourly security rounds of Main floor, Dining Hall, Kitchen and Dorms. Checking washrooms, stairwells, fire exits and doors.
  • Complete security rounds of exterior of the Centre, checking the parking compound, exterior fire escape hourly.
  • Record activities and incidents occurring during shift in a factual and concise manner using Log Book and/or Incident Book.
  • Answer telephone and provide inquirer with necessary direction.
  • Maintain cleanliness of Front Desk area inside and out, including the area where the food is stored.
  • Contact emergency service personnel (ambulance and police) when needed.
  • Complete incident reports, statistics/cash report before completing shift.
  • Maintain confidentiality with regard to clients/staff and Centre's records.
  • Work closely with and carry out tasks assigned to you by your supervisor.
  • When necessary, call in relief workers according to procedures using on-call list.
  • Bed checks to be done according to approved procedures (nights).

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate knowledge of The Salvation Army Booth Centre Policy and Procedures Manual.
  • Meet with Program Manager for supervision as scheduled.
  • Engage in formal evaluation sessions with the Program Manager at six and twelve months in the first year and annually thereafter.
  • Model appropriate qualities for this position - i.e., self-motivation, punctuality, and personal hygiene.
  • Commit to and sign the agency and clients' confidentiality form.
  • Attend staff meetings of The Salvation Army Booth Centre Hamilton, Staff Training workshops and conferences, as authorized by the Centre.
  • Work within mandate and mission of the Salvation Army.
  • Represent The Salvation Army Booth Centre in a professional manner.

Perform other duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This is a permanent part-time position with 16 hours per week. Flexibility in scheduling is required. The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility. Applicable shifts include a ½ hour paid meal break.

Shifts: 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., Friday to Saturday, Statutory Holidays

  • May work with potentially aggressive clients.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Post-Secondary Education preferred and/or a combination of education and related life experience.
  • Possess current WHMIS, First Aid and CPR certificates.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Competent on computer equipment such as Windows, Microsoft Office, HIFIS etc.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of community-based resources.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish and implement goals and plans for self and clients.
  • Maturity and ability to exercise sound judgement.
  • Ability to work with socially disadvantaged people who may often harbor resentment and anger.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and under supervision.
  • Ability to lift/carry up to forty pounds.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
