Locations: All City of Markham Pool locations (Cornell Community Centre, Angus Glen Community Centre, Centennial Community Centre, Milliken Mills Community Centre, Thornhill Community Centre, Thornlea Pool and Aaniin Community Centre)

Job Summary:
Plans, organizes, instructs and leads specialty swimming programs (First Aid, Airway Management, NL Instructor, Lifesaving/ Swim Instructor, AMT - Aquatic Management Training, AST -­ Aquatic Supervisor Training, Train the trainer NL, Lifesaving/ Swim Instructors, First Aid) for participants and trainees in a range of specialty areas for adults and youth. Teaches according to industry standards. Evaluates participants, while ensuring a positive and safe environment for all participants and peers.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Facilitates and leads and supervises a specialty swimming program to participants of all ages. Teaches skills required for the specific program. The purpose of the instruction context is to create an understanding of the techniques and skills of the sport/activity or procedure.
  • Organizes and writes lesson plans and short­ term core plans to facilitate progressive learning according to the set guidelines and specific to the abilities of each group.
  • Prepares and presents an orientation to patrons/participants at the beginning of each program session including general rules and procedures of the program being taught and safety measures to be followed.
  • Various administrative duties as required

Qualifications (all levels):

  • Current Lifesaving Society Instructor
  • Current Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid with CPR “C”
  • Good customer service and communication (written and verbal) skills to coach, mentor and train a diverse range of generally adult students enrolled in one of the specialty aquatics programs.
  • Good Leadership skills
  • Effective computer and research skills an asset.
  • Ability to work tactfully with other staff as part of a team.
  • Positive attitude.
  • Enjoys working with people of all ages.
  • Ability and fitness level to perform aquatics instruction and rescue skills to standard.
  • Current Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening Letter is required.

Qualifications Specific to each Specialist Level:

Aquatic Leadership Conductor/Swim Specialist 1: ($29.05 Hourly)

  • 30 to 40 hours of additional training beyond their Aquatics Instructor designation, including the Examiner Standard Clinic and additional relevant courses for the Program being taught are required.
  • Some prior experience in an Instructor capacity is preferred with demonstrated instructing skills.
  • Examiner certification for course being taught. (e.g. First Aid Instructors)
  • Current Advanced Instructor certification/status

Aquatic Leadership Conductor/Swim Specialist 3: ($36.05 Hourly)

  • 40 -­ 50 hours of additional training beyond their Aquatic Instructor designation, including the Examiner Standard Clinic.
  • Significant experience in an Aquatics Supervisory capacity or in the capacity of either a Lifeguard or an Instructor
    with leadership responsibilities is required to deliver the Aquatics Supervisory Training Program and/or to deliver
    the NL Instructor Trainer Program.
  • Current Instructor and Examiner status for course being taught (e.g. NL Instructor Course, Aquatics Supervisory Training Instructor Course)
  • Instructors and Trainers certification.
  • Forty hours of additional apprenticeship is required for the NL and Instructor Trainer programs in addition to the 25 to 30 hours of in-class training.
  • Current Instructor and Examiner status for course being taught
  • Current Lifesaving Society Airway Management and Instructors’ Course or Instructor Trainer Course; or NL Instructor course
